Hey everybody, I just want to share what this page is about. I’m autistic. I was diagnosed as a 39 year old man. I went for diagnostics testing because my wife and I have a child who has autism. We learned tons and tons about what our girl was going through. My wife kept looking at me saying “Hmmmm…. That sounds like you.” We just made the assumption that I was on the spectrum too. My parents did the best that they knew how. I was never diagnosed but not for lack of trying. One day my daughter was speaking with her grandmother and casually mentioned that I was autistic. My mother, somewhat puzzled, responded with “Your daddy isn’t autistic. Difficult perhaps, but not autistic.” My daughter was crushed. More notably, she was alone, again. It was paramount for my wife and I to seek out adult testing so that our daughter would know that she is not alone if I in fact had autism. Well, I do.
My daughter and I now have a code that we use with each other when neurotypical people do things we don’t understand. We make an “n” in sign language for “normies.” My wife eventually caught on to our little code. Needless to say she responded with a gratuitous eye roll. I shared all that to say: If you are a normie trying to negotiate life’s chaIlenges surrounding your person with autism OR if you’re an autie and you have to deal with normies, I see you. I hope that this blog helps you or someone who has an autie in their life. That’s all for now.
